DIY: Vintage Tinted Mason Jars

Aren’t old vintage glass mason jars gorgeous? I would love to own some but because of the Great Mason Jar Rebirth they are hard to come by and overpriced if found at all. You already know my solution: DIY that goodness!

Supplies you will need:

  • Mason jar
  • Mod Podge
  • Food coloring
  • Ramekin, cup, or some other container to mix the food coloring in
  • Wooden or disposable stirrer
  • Paper bag, paper plate, or any other item you can mess up and then throw away
  • Wax paper
  • Baking pan

To start, mix up any color combination you want in a ramekin, cup, etc.

Fun with color mixing! I created this orange combo with 3 drops of red and 5 drops of yellow.

Pour 2-3 tablespoons of Mod Podge directly into a clean mason jar. Add the food coloring on top and, with a disposable stirrer, stir the two together.

Once the color and Mod Podge are thoroughly combined, rotate the jar to coat the entire inside. Pour out any excess then turn the jar upside down to set for 30 minutes.

You can obviously make as many jars in as many color combinations as you want. I started out simple with a coral colored one and a blue one.

After the jars have set for 30 minutes, place them upside down on a wax paper lined baking sheet. Bake in a 200 degree over for 15 minutes. Remember to be careful when you take them out of the oven!

And voila! You just made tinted mason jars!

The color clearly came out pretty light on my jars but I actually really like it. There are plenty of other online tutorials (here and here) that have deeper colors but I like the lighter tinted ones.

Arrange some baubles, small collectables, or even some fake flowers in there and boom, pretty faux-vintage mason jars!
