Moonrise Kingdom Watercolor

A few months ago I was inspired to try out watercolors for the first time since I was a kid. I totally credit Sarah Coyne (Egg-A-Go-Go). She’s an amazing local artist with incredible watercolor skills. Super inspiring! She’s a total Instagram must-follow too: pretty art and adorable cats.

I headed to my beloved local craft store and picked up a basic set of 12 watercolors and watercolor paper.

I love the watercolor set I bought. The colors are really basic and it came with a brush and white watercolor paint. The best thing though is the case which doubles as a mixing palette when opened.

I dabbled for a few days (watching many beginner how-tos on Youtube) then decided to make John something for his birthday. I knew my skills weren’t awesome yet and it would probably look amateur-ish, but I love homemade gifts so I went for it.

We recently had watched Moonrise Kingdom together on HBO (I saw it in the theater and insisted John see it). During the scene where the beachfront campsite is revealed to be Moonrise Kingdom, I could tell John was smitten with the movie. I decided to make a little replica print of that scene in watercolor.

I googled some pictures and drew my own version. It took me a few hours to paint.

Here is the final product. I framed it and wrapped it up for John’s birthday. I wasn’t sure how he would react but he loved it. Handmade gifts are so much more sentimental and personal. I’m so glad I made this for him!

Stay tuned for more watercolor projects!
